What this SVG to GIF converter can handle

It captures animations written into the SVG itself. Animations that need JavaScript to run will not move, because scripts are removed for safety before the file is opened.

SMIL tags: animate, set, animateTransform, animateMotionCaptured
A still SVG with no animationWorks, but every frame looks the same
Animation driven by JavaScriptNot captured, scripts are removed

Measured results

We ran the sample SVG on this page through this SVG to GIF tool in Chrome on Nov 5, 2026. Length was 3 seconds. Your numbers will vary with colors, size and how much of the picture changes.

SettingsFramesGIF size
240 px wide, 10 FPS3065 KB
480 px wide, 15 FPS45189 KB
480 px wide, 25 FPS75314 KB
800 px wide, 15 FPS45328 KB

When a GIF is too large, lower the width or the frame rate. Both had a similar effect in this test.

SVG or GIF: which should you use?

Keep the SVG for your own website, where it stays sharp at any size. Use SVG to GIF conversion when it has to play somewhere that won't run an animated SVG, such as an email, a chat app or a slide.

Animated SVGGIF
ScalingSharp at any sizeFixed pixel size
ColorsFull colorUp to 256 per frame

Exporting a transparent GIF

Switch on Transparent before you convert. GIF has no partial transparency, so soft edges can look slightly rough. If they do, turn Transparent off and set the background color to match the page where the GIF will sit.

How to convert SVG to GIF

It takes three steps, and the sample is loaded so you can try it right away.

Add your SVG

Set the output

The length is detected from the animation when possible. Pick the width, frame rate, background and loop.

Your SVG probably has no built-in animation, or it's animated by JavaScript. This tool captures CSS and SMIL animations only.

Yes. Switch on Transparent before converting. GIF pixels are either fully see-through or fully solid, so soft edges can look a little rough.
